Political science majors are drawn to and can be successful in a number of occupations and professions.

Training in political science at UNL provides students with a capacity to gather information, sort through it, select that which is relevant, and apply it in solving a specific problem.  

Political science majors are critical thinkers and problem-solvers, and these skills are in demand virtually everywhere.

Training in political science also provides students with strong spoken and written language skills. Increasingly the ability to communicate clearly and concisely separates those who are prepared for the 21st century from those who are not.

You should plan your educational experiences to maximize the your career opportunities. Think of the educational process in terms of its potential for increasing available job options.

  • Mathematics, statistics, and computer skills increase a student's value as a prospective employee. Graduates are being hired for careers that center upon the analysis of social, political, and economic data. Take courses in statistics and methods of data analysis.
  • The ability to write and speak concisely and clearly will always be highly valued.
  • An internship with government, in journalism, with a private or public interest group or a law firm gives a student both practical experience and an opportunity to explore a prospective career.
