Is it true that ethnic conflicts have become the leading source of political violence in the
world and that "ancient hatreds" are contributing to an era of increasing intrastate violence? The simple
but conclusive answer is no. My book, Taming Ethnic Hatred: ethnic cooperation and transnational networks
in Eastern Europe (Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 2007) explains the surprising turn of events in Eastern
Europe after the violence in Yugoslavia. It does so by discussing transnational networks and changes in global
governance. I have also co-edited and written for books on U.S. foreign policy (American Foreign Policy in a
Globalized World with Forsythe and Wedeman) and human rights (International Human Rights and Diversity with
Forsythe) and my journal articles have appeared in Political Science Quarterly, Ethnopolitics, and Democratization.
