The Political Science Major

Requirements
The major in political science requires thirty (30) hours including the following: a) PS 100 (Power and Politics in America) or PS 100H (denoting honors); b) one of the following from the political theory field of study: PS 108, 380, 385, 483, 484 or 485; c) PS 400 (the senior-level capstone course); six (6) hours from three of the following areas of study: American government, politics and law; foreign and comparative government; international relations; political theory; public administration and public policy; and e) at least nine (9) hours at the 400 level.

Students may not take courses in the major pass/no pass except PS 395 (internship).

The Minor

Requirements
A Plan A minor in political science requires eighteen (18) hours including PS 100 and one course at the 400; a Plan B minor requires any twelve (12) hours.

Bachelor Arts Degree in Political Science

University and Departmental Requirements

Thirty (30) hours in political science to include:

  • PS 100, PS 100H or PS 105;
  • Either PS 108, 380, 483, 484 or 485;
  • PS 400;
  • Six (6) hours from three of the following areas of study: American government, politics and law; foreign and comparative government; international relations; political theory, methodology, and behavior; public administration and public policy; and
  • Nine (9) hours at the 400 level.

  • Library 110. Introduction to Library Research
  • Essential Studies (16 courses [46 hrs] in 8 areas, + language)
  • Communication (6 hrs)
  • Mathematics and Statistics (3 hrs)
  • Human Behavior, Culture, and Social Organization (9 hrs - 2 different depts.)
  • Science and Technology (10 hrs - 2 different depts., 1 lab)
  • Historical Studies (6 hrs - 3 from History of Civilization subarea)
  • Humanities (3 hrs minimum)
  • Arts (3 hrs minimum)
  • Additional Humanities or Arts (6 hrs)
  • Languages (up to 16 hrs or equivalent)
  • 30 of 125 (130 if less than two units of language in HS) hours numbered above 299
  • 30 of 125 (130 if less than two units of language in HS) hours in Integrative Studies courses, at least one at the 200, 300, & 400 level
  • Total GPA 2.0 or higher

Pass/no pass credit is not available in courses for the major.
