Hibbing's research centers on the relationship of biological characteristics to political orientations and behavior, which led to him being named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2011. He regularly collaborates with Husker colleague Kevin Smith and has been regularly published and featured in the media. He coauthored the groundbreaking article, "Political Attitudes Vary with Physiological Traits," which was featured in the journal Science in 2008.
