Degree: Undergraduate
Major: Political Science
Graduation year: December 2024
Who is your employer, and where are they located?
I tried to go to graduate school and I got an admission letter from the George Washington- Elliot School of International Affairs. It is the international affairs graduate school in the Washington DC.
What is your job title and what kind of work does it involve?
I will be the master student who majors in international affairs, especially in international security and Asia. My career dream is to become a Northeast Asia security specialist.
What sparked your interest in your major?
I took several classes related to international relations at the Political Science Department. Especially, the course 'USA Foreign Policy' was really interesting to me. I could learn general US foreign policy history, and also learned current US government foreign policies. Because of that kind of class, I realized my interest in international relations is deep, that is one of the main reasons why I decided to go to graduate school.
What do you see as the value of your major?
The curriculum of Political Science prepared me to go to graduate school. Because of many discussions regarding political issues and world issues, I could improve my communication skills. Furthermore, many courses in political science encouraged me to establish my own research topic for my final research papers. This activity may be helpful for me to write some papers in master's program.
Were there any other people, activities, or events from your time at UNL that helped you get to where you are now?
Many professors in Political Science helped me prepare to go to graduate school. Especially, Prof. Schaub did several consultations for me regarding graduate school programs and gave substantial advice on how to prepare the writing sample, which is one of the files that I need to submit during the graduate school application.
Career Coach, Sai Sato Mumm, also helped my preparation for graduate school. She helped me make a resume and a Statement of Purpose. Without her, I would not make them efficiently.
UNL Model United Nations Club allowed me to discuss world issues freely. Through this club, I could participate in the American Model United Nations Conference in Chicago, and through this event, I could learn how the UN works to ensure peace in the world.
Tell us about the path you took to get to where you are today in your career and how you applied your education in your major to get here.
Because it is just admission to the graduate school, I would say, I just keep revising my resume and Statement of Purpose; talking regularly about my preparation for graduate school with professors and a career coach; and contacting the admission staff of graduate schools to get more information about graduate programs. By continuing to do these works, I could get an admission letter from the graduate school. On the other hand, I did my best to learn advanced knowledge of international relations by reading course materials thoroughly. I can summarize, I just do my best as a student.
What are your future professional goals?
As mentioned earlier, I want to become a security specialist who specializes in the Northeast Asia region. By doing this work, I wish to promote peace not only in that region but also in the world.
