Assistant Professor of Practice Dr. Tyler R. White was named the International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE) 2018 Instructor of the Year in July at the annual conference in Sydney, Australia. He was recognized for his curriculum development at UNL and leadership in the UNL Intelligence Community (IC) Scholars Program, which is a part of the Intelligence Community Centers of Academic Excellence (IC CAE) Program housed at the Defense Intelligence Agency. As part of the IC Scholars Program, Dr. White and his colleagues developed an innovative minor in National Security Studies and seminars on creative and critical thinking, as well as unique exercises such as simulations. They also hosted conferences with notable guests, including members of the IC.
From 2012 to 2014, Dr. White organized a five day simulation for the IC CAE program in Washington, D.C. The program simulated a task force style response to a nuclear Iran and used exercises in debriefing, code breaking, field ops, photo interpretation, and all source analysis to build an understanding of an unfolding scenario. According to Dr. White, he took many of these lessons back to his own classes taught in the Political Science Department and the Honors College. He has also helped to foster a working relationship with the USSTRATCOM J5 through their Deterrence and Assurance Academic Alliance (DAAA) by sponsoring student research teams for the past four years. His research teams have presented their findings at the USSTRATCOM Annual Deterrence Symposium and the DAAA Annual conference.
All his work with the IC CAE program, along with his excellent teaching at UNL, is now recognized by the IAFIE through the 2018 Instructor of the Year Award.
