Richard Fiavor, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Political Science, reflects on the impact of his internship at the Asian Community and Cultural Center, an organization that promotes the general well-being of immigrant and new American communities.

During his time at the center, Richard assisted with survey distribution, offered insights and informed opinions during meetings, managed survey responses in Qualtrics software, and conducted preliminary literature reviews. He says that some of the most important skills gained during the internship included communicating and working in a multicultural setting; using and developing problem-solving skills; and the ability to come up with creative and practical ideas.

Richard expresses how this experience showed his strong commitment, diligence, reliability, and detail-oriented mindset, and how he “learned that the success of the activities of an immigrant-serving organization significantly depends on the support that they receive from the majority native population.” He hopes to continue attending the organization’s events and celebrations as well as to further expand his knowledge and skills related to human rights organizations.
