The Political Science Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln awarded the third annual Carroll R. McKibbin Distinguished Teaching and Research awards at an awards banquet on September 14.

Carroll R. McKibbin, a former chair of the Political Science Department, and his wife Lynn, fund the awards. Carroll and Lynn have been generous supporters of both the political science department and the university for a number of years. Carroll made the official presentation of the awards.

Associate professor Courtney Hillebrecht received the Carroll R. McKibbin Distinguished Teaching Award and assistant professor Alice Kang received the Carroll R. McKibbin Distinguished Research Award.

“I was thrilled to be honored by the department and am grateful to the McKibbins for their generous support,” Kang said.

Hillebrecht said she was deeply honored to be recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award.

“Student learning is central to our work as faculty members, and I'm particularly grateful to have had the Department of Political Science Undergraduate Advisory Committee bestow this award,” Hillebrecht said. “Carroll's career has been a testament to how much of an impact we can have on our students, and his continued support and generosity are inspiring to all of us.”

Hillebrecht received the Distinguished Research Award back in 2014 for her new book, Domestic Politics and International Human Rights Tribunals: The Problem of Compliance (Cambridge University Press 2014).

The banquet also featured Carolee Heileman from the United States Department of State as a keynote speaker.

Faculty in the political science department also expressed how meaningful it was to receive this gift from Carroll and Lynn McKibbin. The department is grateful to the McKibbin’s for their continued support and generosity, and wishes to congratulate associate professor Hillebrecht and assistant professor Kang on their much-deserved awards.
